Queen Ethelburga’s

Co-Educational Boarding School for Students from 5 to 18 Years

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate comprises four schools, each with its unique qualities, but all sharing a common purpose of providing students with first-class education and the opportunity to work towards higher education and a successful career. There are strong academic standards across the Foundation and students are encouraged to have high expectations for their achievements and career prospects. There is a very wide curriculum available, which enables students to pursue their individual interests and aspirations across a range of fields, alongside a vast array of extra-curricular opportunities which enable students to widen their experience and gain both skills and confidence. Visitors to QE often remark on the productive and cheerful atmosphere that pervades and the purposefulness of the pupils as they enjoy the considerable opportunities that the environment provides. We welcome you to come and see for yourself what makes QE special and its pupils so successful. The Collegiate is set in a traditional walled estate around the beautiful Thorpe Underwood Hall, which is surrounded by modern purpose built facilities. We are close to the attractive and historic city of York in the North of England, just 2 hours by train from the centre of London providing a safe and secure environment in which students can both live and study.

The schools that make up the Collegiate are:

Chapter House Preparatory School

For students from the ages of 5 to 10 years old, Chapter House lays the foundations of a strong education with strong emphasis on core subjects, but with a stimulating wider curriculum to excite the interests of young learners.

King’s Magna Middle School

For students from the ages of 10 to 14 years old, Kings Magna seeks to maintain the joy of learning by providing a wide and interesting curriculum pursued with a high level of focus, whilst also introducing a comprehensive range of activities and leadership opportunities.

Queen Ethelburga’s College

For students from the ages of 14 to 19 years old, Queen Ethelburga’s College follows a fast-paced curriculum of GCSE and A-Level subjects for students who are looking for academic rigour, and who have high aspirations for university, either in the UK or abroad. Queen Ethelburga’s College is ranked as the 2nd Independent Co-educational Boarding School for A-Level achievement in England by the Times and Daily Telegraph with 85.1% of A-level passes were graded A*/A in June 2017.

The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s

For students from the ages of 14 to 19 years old, The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s offers a wider curriculum, including traditional GCSE and A-Level subjects supplemented with more creative and vocational BTEC options for students who are looking for a more individual approach to course selection and a supportive environment in which to learn. Students can study BTEC courses in Music, Sport, Business Studies, Fashion, Performing Arts, IT and Science. The A-Level A*/A pass rate in The Faculty for 2017 was 76.8% and 91.7% of BTEC qualifications were passed at Distinction*/Distinction level.

The expectation is that all students, irrespective of which senior school they choose, will be equipped to move on to higher education, whether this is at university or within a specialised college. The vast majority of graduating students from both the College and the Faculty gain entry to top Universities every year including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College London, Kings College London, Warwick, Durham, Bristol, Manchester and many more.
